So…Where is Redding?
Redding, California is located in far Northern California about 2 hours above the state capitol of Sacramento and about 2 hours below the Oregon border. Redding is situated in the valley with gorgeous mountain views surrounding our city.
What Recreation Does Redding Provide?
Two of our most famous natural landmarks are Mt. Shasta, which is about one hour to the North and Mt. Lassen which is a little over an hour to the East. Redding has other popular outdoor attractions including Lake Shasta, Shasta Dam, Whiskeytown Lake and the Sundial Bridge at Turtle Bay Museum.
Redding has an unlimited amount of outdoor recreation including fishing, boating, hiking, camping, snow and water skiing and mountain climbing. For fishing we have the Sacramento river and Shasta Lake including many fishing guide companies for both fly fishing and traditional. Boating includes a large houseboat rental industry on Shasta Lake bringing thousands of tourists each year to vacation and enjoy the lush scenery that surrounds the lake. Shasta Lake provides many other opportunities including tours of Shasta Dam, Shasta Caverns tour, camping, dining and hiking and biking trails.
If you are looking for less boat traffic you’ll find the smaller Whiskeytown Lake just 10 minutes to our West to be your oasis. With hiking and biking trails, a kayaking/oaring club, camping facilities and a sand beach for the family, there is something for everyone at Whiskeytown Lake.
If you enjoy mountain climbing and hiking three great local options are Castle Crags, Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen. While many people train for hikes to the peak of Mt. Lassen and Shasta, you can also enjoy a simple day trip to these areas to enjoy some gorgeous scenery while you undertake your workout. Mt. Shasta is also the local skiing and snowshoeing hotspot when the Mt. Shasta Ski Park is in operation.
During the off-season enjoy activities such as hiking and biking around Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen. Another outdoor activity is our very own Waterworks Park, with fun for the entire family. Open during the summer season, Waterworks is an oasis from the hot summer months and provides great family entertainment.
The Redding Aquatics Center is a new addition to the city as our “city pool” but is much more. The center features water slides and fun activities for kids of all ages from infants to adults. Children big and small always enjoy the amazing Kids Kingdom park, located in the heart of Redding. Kids Kingdom is a grand adventure with a large wooden play structure including an intercom system, hamster wheels, tiled art, tire pit and more. Kids Kingdom also is located in a large park with an 18-hole disc golf course, basketball courts and walking trail. The most popular new attraction to our area is the World-Famous Sundial Bridge, the largest glass suspension bridge in America. Situated between the Turtle Bay Museum and Exploration park, a family friendly museum for all, and the McConnell Foundation Arboretum, strolling gardens, the Sundial Bridge spans the Sacramento River and is a great place to enjoy a sunny afternoon. Watch the river flow by at the Turtle Bay Café or stroll the walking/biking trails at your leisure. For more information on things to do in Redding, visit our Redding Recreation Page.
